Looking ahead to 2022: what's coming for J.D.L. Rosell's books
Welcome to the new year! While there are a bunch of not-so-fun things happening in the world at the moment, I hope that you’re looking forward to it in your personal lives and are excited for what’s to come.
For writers like myself, January means looking to the year ahead and planning what’s happening. If you’ll allow me a few minutes, I’ll take you through everything that’s happening with my books for 2022!
WORKS IN PROGRESS
First, we’ll start with what I’m currently working on:
Writing the second half of Ranger of the Titan Wilds, Book 1
Putting the finishing touches on The Crown of Fire & Fury, Book 2 of The Runewar Saga
The final rounds of edits for Requiem of Silence, Book 3 of The Famine Cycle
Beginning the rewrites and edits for A God’s Plea, Book 4 of Legend of Tal
As you can see, the Ranger series is the only new one to my catalog; the rest are either finishing up series or continuing them. And while that might seem like a lot, I’m not working on more than two projects at any one time. My brain would be scrambled if I attempted that!
Now, as it’s the new kid on the block, let’s dive into a bit more of what’s going on with Ranger. If you’ve been following along with my career this year or poked around my site at all, you may have noticed that there are already some stories posted in the series. That’s because I’ve released what I originally conceived as the first book on Amazon’s serial platform Kindle Vella (you can also read it on my Patreon).
But plans change, and ideas expand. I’m now 90% sure that what’s posted to Vella will only be the first half of the book, the second half of which I am currently writing. That should make the story about double its current length, and consequently the longest book I’ve written to date - a whopping 800 or so pages!
You may question why I’m doing this. There are several reasons, but the most important one is that I think it will be a grander experience for the reader. Many of my favorite books are absolute tomes, and while I don’t think length is necessarily the most important factor, it will allow readers to see a ton of growth in the characters and get an even bigger pay-off for the climax.
I’m really excited about where Ranger is going, and I hope you’ll check it out when it’s ready to release later in 2022!
WORKS TO BE RELEASED
Speaking of releases, what do I plan on publishing this year? There will be a lot of repeats from the titles above, but to put timings on it:
The Crown of Fire & Fury is shaping up to be released in February.
Requiem of Silence has a hard deadline in April, so you can count on it being ready by then.
A God’s Plea will likely come out in late summer, so around July or August.
Ranger of the Titan Wilds, Book 1 (Title still TBD) will probably round out the year in autumn.
If I’m diligent, I may eke in a fifth release, as I should have enough bandwidth in my schedule for it. But I’d be pretty satisfied with four books as well, and certainly won’t rush anything to accomplish it.
But new books aren’t the only things that may come out! I expect we’ll also see some more audiobooks released by Podium, my publisher for that format. It’s possible they might get to Crown, God, and Ranger, but only time shall tell!
NEW WAYS TO GET INVOLVED
I’m really trying to expand the opportunities readers and those interested in my career have to get further involved, and I’ve put a lot of thought into how I’m doing that. In that respect, here’s what I came up with:
My Patreon has been overhauled! There are five tiers now, all with distinct rewards that stack the higher you subscribe. Check it out for exclusive stories, glory and fame, signed books, a crown, and more!
My advance reviewer group has resurrected! Throughout my career, I’ve made a few stumbling attempts to start one, but I’ve now committed to making it permanent! If you’d like to join the Chapter and read my books before release in exchange for honest reviews, email me at “authorjdlrosell (at) gmail (dot) com” and I’ll get you added in.
I made a Facebook group! If you want to chat on a more informal basis with me, come join the Fabled Fellowship over on Facebook.
SIGNED BOOKS STORE? BOOK MERCH? SPECIAL EDITION HARDBACKS?
Never say never! I’ve been mulling over these sorts of thing for a while, but I don’t have any definite plans as of yet. Stay tuned here for anything that does come!
ENOUGH ALREADY!
That seems like more than enough to keep me busy, doesn’t it? Thanks for reading, and I hope you’re looking forward to it all as much as I am!
Ever your humble bard,
Josiah
